The HACCP system helps customers to be supplied with safe groceries from the point of view of consumer safety. Because our company PDL GmbH specialises in packaging and dry food logistics, the HACCP system plays a key role in our daily operations.
The HACCP standard matters to us because of our own motivation, as we want to offer our customers the highest standards of service. In the following, we explain our work with the HACCP system and the benefits and assurances our customers gain from it.
In its long form, HACCP means „hazard analysis and critical control points“. The HACCP standard refers purely to food and is used to identify and prevent hazards to consumers from food products at an early stage.
For this purpose, so-called critical control points are defined in the HACCP system. If these points are violated, the respective food products are not allowed into the consumption cycle. In addition, exceeding or falling below the critical control points requires an adjustment of the processes in the business in order to ensure that these control points are adhered to in the future and that it does not regularly happen that food cannot be admitted to the consumption cycle.
Ultimately, the HACCP system not only helps to identify and avoid hazards at an early stage. The HACCP system also helps to reduce costs in food logistics and prevent damage to products. The latter contributes to inventory security. Thus, the HACCP system is a grateful standard for us, our customers and all logistics companies, which shows optimisation approaches in logistics and encourages their implementation.
When developing and implementing a company’s internal HACCP system, principles must be observed. This applies to every logistics procedure controlled by companies in the HACCP system. The following seven HACCP principles are involved:
Incidentally, all businesses that carry out any of the following activities on or with food are affected by the requirement to set up a HACCP system: Preparation, processing, production, packaging, storage, transport, allocation, treatment, distribution.
As a company for food logistics, the activities of packaging and storage apply to us in any case. If you book our services in the fulfilment warehouse or our transport services, the activity of transport also applies to us. Therefore, we have to set up our own HACCP system.
In order to ensure compliance with the principles and thus a legally compliant HACCP system for all these activities, we have implemented several procedures. Through these procedures, we ensure an accurate hazard analysis and the swift initiation of adequate measures in the event that critical control points are not met or exceeded.
In order to offer ourselves and our customers, who entrust us with the storage of their food, an even higher level of safety, we not only have an HACCP system, but also work according to the IFS Logistics and FSSC 22000 standards. Furthermore, we have developed our own hygiene concept. We regularly train our employees in hygienic aspects and document these training courses for quality management.
In addition, we work together with a renowned company in the field of pest control. As part of this cooperation, we have had a precise analysis of the current situation for our company (hazard analysis and risk assessment) and a monitoring concept specially tailored for us. This monitoring includes the systematic establishment of control points for monitoring in our properties in order to be able to detect a pest infestation at an early stage. We work with an online documentation system that makes optimal monitoring possible.
